We are the revolutionary engines of our communities. These times are for the Witches, because this is when our power matters. Witchcraft has always stood as a resistance to oppressive systems, dating back to Ancient Egypt, China, India, Greece, Aztec, Inca, Ireland, Scotland, Turtle Island, and Europe.
We Witches preserve our culture by practicing mutual aid, science, and storytelling. We do not go into hiding. We go deep into our personal practices and resist the system in plain sight. We heal others through poetry, music, herbs and chemical reactions, experimentation, collecting data, cooking, preserving knowledge, caring for our neighbors, our children, our animals, and the elderly, tending to the Earth and casting protective spells around ourselves and the most vulnerable in community. Today I pulled the Queen of Pentacles; a reminder that my craft encompasses all of my skills as a human being in order to create a better World. It is constant work in the mundane—meeting and elevating the basic needs of myself and those who surround me in order to keep Magic alive and well. This is a constant practice in tending to myself and others with clarity, purpose, and defiance in the face of a government that wants us dead, muted, and docile. If I neglect my craft by sinking into despair, I shirk my responsibility to my community. By avoiding potential unjust persecution, I am harming others. My silence is violence, not only to the most vulnerable but to my own humanity. If I cut myself off from writing my thoughts and opinions; if I ignore the harm being caused; if I don’t make sure my neighbors have food, shelter, warm clothes, running water, healthcare, etc., the I will lose my own health and safety; my own access to basic needs, my own life. We cannot claim our craft and refuse to act in the face of hate and despotism. We must stay well and strong in our practice by caring for ourselves and others. This is the actual Magic. This is the deep, sacred work that is constant and abundant. It is not clothed in finery and steeped in mysticism. It is the real, everyday actions of our magical selves that moves us and our communities through the wickedness of authoritarianism and into revolution
