I have a tendency to pass gas a lot during yoga. It always happens in Downward facing Dog and forward bend. Is this normal? I worry that it's not and I think other people notice it, too.
Downward Farting Dog
Dear Downward Farting Dog,
Dude. We all do it. This is why, whenever I’m teaching, I don’t stand at the back of the room during the first ten minutes of class. It’s totally normal, and if others are judging you then that is entirely their problem.
I do understand that it can be a little embarrassing, especially when there is noise involved. But since everyone does, in fact, fart while in forward fold and downward facing dog, it’s necessary that we discuss and learn the reasons why.
To bring some solid facts to this issue, I consulted a relative who happens to work in the medical field. According to her, these are some, but not all, of the reasons why we experience gas when participating in any form of exercise--including yoga asana:
1) When we exercise we inhale more than we exhale, which leads to trapped air in our system. This trapped air can cause us to release gas.
2) Eating prior to a yoga class can cause gas. Our digestive system is slower than we think, and forced movement/stress often results in flatulence.
3) Certain foods naturally cause more gas than others, and it doesn’t matter whether you eat them hours or minutes before you practice.
So, there you have it. I invite you to explore this reasoning in relation to your practice. Thank you for creating a learning opportunity for us all, and for keeping it real.
